Math+

General Course Outline

RedwoodPrep's Math+ program includes six separate courses focused on high-level math concepts including Infinity, Number Theory, and Probability. Each course consists of six one-hour sessions. The concepts explored are University-level topics not typically included in the traditional elementary or high school mathematics curriculum. Math+ presents these topics in an accessible and engaging way for 6th to 8th grade students. Each Math+ course focuses on one critical, high-level mathematics concept: Infinity, Number Theory, Probability, Proofs and Logic, Applied Number Theory and Geometry. Each season, participating schools offer one Math+ course for interested students. While each of the six courses connect to one another, there are no prerequisites for any course and students can join the two-year cycle of courses at any time.

The Math+ program offers several significant advantages to participants. Many 6th to 8th grade students are not conceptually challenged in school and spend most of their time learning skills (e.g., multiplication, spelling), not concepts. Math+ position students to learn challenging, complex concepts and tackle novel problems that require outside the box thinking. The experience teaches students to think conceptually and creatively while appreciating the beauty in mathematics. This is the sort of skill that serves a student well over their lifetime as they apply to colleges in a few years and then enter the workforce. Just as importantly, the Math+ program prepares students to excel on standardized exams including the HSPT, SAT and ACT with Math+ courses referring to challenging standardized exam questions that help students see the direct link between concepts they are learning in the program and hard questions they will face on upcoming standardized exams. Lastly, Math+ allows students to experience high level mathematics that prepares them for entrance and success in advanced high school and college mathematics classes.

Math+ courses are taught by premier local high school instructors who generally teach the most advanced courses at their local high school. The courses are challenging, but students who pay attention and do targeted exercises and homework can master these challenging concepts. Math+ is an excellent fit for students who like math, who have experienced success in math, or both.

The classroom experience is high-energy, fast-paced, and focused and serves as a helpful introduction to high school level mathematics instruction and university-level mathematics concepts.

Students receive weekly homework exercises; these activities should not exceed more than one hour a week.
